Area of Study 1 - Applied Computing: Data Analysis

Overview

In this area of study, the focus is on interpreting given solution requirements, designs and data to develop data visualisations. The work combines database, spreadsheet and data visualisation tools so that data can be manipulated, analysed and presented clearly.

The solution work includes interpreting data, selecting suitable formats and conventions, and applying validation and testing techniques so that the data used in the final visualisations is reasonable, complete and fit for purpose.

Computational thinking is used to identify trends and patterns in data, while design thinking is used to present findings effectively for an audience.

Outcome 1 On completion of this unit the student should be able to interpret given solution requirements and designs, analyse data and develop data visualisations to present findings.

Software Tools

  • database software
  • spreadsheet software
  • data visualisation software
  • a tool for running SQL queries

Key Focus

  • interpreting requirements, constraints and scope
  • exploring primary and secondary data sources
  • using design tools to represent database, spreadsheet and visualisation ideas
  • manipulating, validating and analysing data
  • presenting findings using suitable formats, conventions and data visualisations
