🧠 Game Design Principles Overview

Welcome to the Game Design Principles module.

Before we dive into the code and the engines, we need to understand why games are fun, how they keep players engaged, and what makes a "good" game different from a "bad" one.

❓ What is Game Design?

Game design is the art of applying design and aesthetics to create a game for entertainment or for educational, exercise, or experimental purposes.

It involves creating the rules, goals, challenges, and interactions that define the player's experience. A game designer doesn't just "make a game"—they design an experience.

♟ Core Concepts

In this section, we will explore:

  1. Deconstruction: Learning how to break down existing games into their component parts.
  2. Theory: Understanding player psychology, motivation, and the "Flow State."
  3. Analysis: Applying our knowledge to critique and improve both classic and modern titles.

▶ Where to Next?

Start by exploring the Game Design Elements. These are the building blocks we will use to analyze every game in this course.

Fun Fact

Did you know that many of the most successful game designers (like Shigeru Miyamoto) often start their designs on paper with drawings and charts before ever touching a computer?
